Short answer: Tønder is closer to the German border (about 5 km) and marries couples from abroad on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Aabenraa, about 25 km from the border, marries Monday to Thursday with the municipality's witnesses and on Fridays with your own, and releases dates 60 days in advance. The legal process via Familieretshuset is identical in both towns.

Who this guide is for: Couples, many of them from Germany, who want to marry in Denmark close to the border and are deciding between the two town halls.

Key points

  • Process: Familieretshuset first approves the application (about 5 working days for complete applications, a target rather than a guarantee), then the date is booked online with the municipality.
  • Distance: Tønder is about 5 km from the German border, Aabenraa about 25 km (north of the Kruså/Padborg crossing on the E45). From Hamburg, both are about 2–2.5 hours by car.
  • Wedding days: Tønder on Tuesdays and Thursdays; Aabenraa Monday to Thursday with the municipality's witnesses, and Monday, Tuesday, Thursday afternoon or Friday with your own witnesses.
  • Language: Tønder Kommune highlights its registry staff's very good German and English; Aabenraa Kommune names English, German or Danish, and both partners must be able to communicate in one of them.
  • Both municipalities provide two witnesses free of charge, charge nothing for the ceremony and issue two international marriage certificates in five languages.
  • With the €799.00 Comfort Package (Danish authority fee included) we prepare the application and book the date in either town, and the two witnesses are included.

Tønder and Aabenraa are the two town halls near the German border where Denmark Wedding Services books ceremonies. The legal process is identical in both; the differences are in the details: how far you drive, on which weekdays you can marry, how dates are released and in which language the registrar speaks. This guide puts those details side by side, based on the information the two municipalities publish (checked in September 2026).

How far are Tønder and Aabenraa from the German border?

Tønder is the closer of the two: it lies about 5 km north of the border (Tønder Kommune gives about 5 km), and you can also reach it by train from Hamburg via Niebüll. Aabenraa lies about 25 km north of the Kruså/Padborg crossing on the E45 and has no passenger railway station of its own. From Hamburg, the drive to either town takes about 2–2.5 hours (Tønder Kommune gives about 200 km to Tønder). Directions are on our pages about getting married in Tønder and getting married in Aabenraa; the Tønder page also lists the municipality's distances from Flensburg, Hamburg and Berlin.

Where do the ceremonies take place?

In Tønder you marry in the municipality's registry office at Jomfrustien 8, 1st floor, opposite the town hall. There is no lift, but the municipality offers another room for guests with limited mobility, so let us know in advance. In Aabenraa you marry in the old town hall (Det gamle Rådhus), Storegade 30, 1st floor: the room seats 20 and takes up to 50 guests, the lift can be used if you tell the municipality beforehand, and couples with their own witnesses can ask about a beach wedding. More about each venue is on our Tønder and Aabenraa pages.

On which days can you marry, and when are dates released?

Tønder marries couples from abroad on Tuesdays and Thursdays: from 9:30 to 12:00 with the municipality's witnesses, and with your own witnesses on Tuesdays from 13:00 to 14:00 and on Thursdays from 13:00 to 15:00. Public holidays and the municipality's closing days, including a summer break, are excluded. The date can only be booked online, through the link in the approval letter from Familieretshuset, not by e-mail or phone. How soon you can marry depends on the dates Tønder has released at that moment.

Aabenraa offers weddings with the municipality's witnesses from Monday to Thursday, 10:00 to 12:00. With your own witnesses, appointments are available on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday afternoon or Friday. Aabenraa's page for couples from abroad offers no Saturdays; the municipality's Danish page lists a few Saturday dates, so ask Aabenraa before counting on one. Aabenraa Kommune releases its appointments 60 days in advance and, as of September 2026, states that free appointments are about two months ahead. The office is closed from 23 December 2026 to 3 January 2027.

What does the timeline from application to wedding look like?

The steps are the same in both towns and follow in this order; only the booking link and the search for a free date differ.

  • Decide on the town and gather your documents. The application names the wedding municipality.
  • The application goes to Familieretshuset. About 5 working days for complete applications is its general target, not a guarantee.
  • After the approval you receive the booking link: in Tønder it is included in the approval letter; in Aabenraa you receive it by e-mail once Familieretshuset has approved your papers.
  • You book the date. In Aabenraa, appointments are released 60 days in advance, and as of September 2026 the free ones are about two months ahead. In Tønder you choose from the Tuesday and Thursday dates the municipality has released at that moment.
  • The wedding must take place while the approval (Prøvelsesattest) is valid: 4 months, or less if a passport, visa or residence permit expires earlier.

Book non-refundable travel only once the date is confirmed.

In which language is the ceremony held?

Tønder Kommune points out that its registry staff have very good German and English, and witnesses you bring yourself should speak some German or English. The municipality publishes no further rule on the ceremony language, so if you would like the ceremony in another language, ask us before the application is submitted.

Aabenraa Kommune names English, German or Danish explicitly: both partners must be able to communicate in one of these languages; otherwise you must bring an interpreter. If the registrar cannot communicate with both of you, the wedding cannot take place.

Who are the witnesses, and what does the ceremony cost?

Danish law requires two witnesses. Both municipalities provide them free of charge: Tønder in its morning slots on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aabenraa from Monday to Thursday. Relatives or friends can also be your witnesses; in Tønder they should speak some German or English. With our Comfort Package the two witnesses are included, whichever town you choose.

Neither municipality charges for the ceremony itself: the wedding in Tønder is free of charge, and Aabenraa Kommune states that there are no additional costs. The Familieretshuset fee for the application is included in our €799.00 Comfort Package, so you pay no separate authority fee.

What is the same in Tønder and Aabenraa?

The legal side does not depend on the town. In both places:

  • The application goes to the Danish Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset). About 5 working days for complete applications is its general target, not a guarantee.
  • The documents are the same: a valid passport (or national ID card for EU/EEA citizens), proof of civil status (we ask for documents not older than 3 months), the final divorce decree if either partner was married before, and a residence permit if a non-EU partner lives in the EU. Whether a document needs an apostille depends on the country that issued it.
  • There is no residency requirement, but both partners must be able to enter and stay in Denmark lawfully on the wedding day.
  • The wedding appointment is short: the ceremony itself takes about 10–15 minutes, and Aabenraa Kommune allows about 20 minutes for the whole appointment; your travel documents are checked in the waiting room beforehand.
  • You receive two international marriage certificates in five languages (Danish, English, German, French and Spanish) straight after the ceremony. Within the EU, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 removes the apostille requirement for these certificates; some offices still ask for one, so check with your registry office.

The full document list, with the apostille rules by country, is in the documents you need to marry in Denmark.

Which town suits you better?

Tønder is usually the better fit if:

  • you want to marry as close to the border as possible (about 5 km), or you prefer to come by train from Hamburg via Niebüll;
  • a Tuesday or Thursday suits you.

Aabenraa is usually the better fit if:

  • you want more weekdays to choose from: Monday to Thursday with the municipality's witnesses, and Monday, Tuesday, Thursday afternoon or Friday with your own;
  • one of you would like the ceremony in Danish: Aabenraa Kommune names Danish explicitly (for Tønder, ask us first);
  • a guest needs a lift, or you want to know the room size in advance (seats for 20, up to 50 guests);
  • you bring your own witnesses and would like to ask about a beach wedding.

The application names the wedding municipality, so it is best to decide on the town before it is submitted. If you already hold an approval and want to marry in Aabenraa, Aabenraa Kommune asks you to contact Familieretshuset, which sends your documents to the municipality; you then receive Aabenraa's booking link. If you are still unsure, tell us your travel dates and we will go through both options with you. Prefer a city wedding? See getting married in Copenhagen.

How does Denmark Wedding Services help in both towns?

With the Comfort Package (€799.00, Danish authority fee included) we check your documents against the Familieretshuset requirements, prepare and submit the application with Tønder or Aabenraa as the wedding municipality, book the date as soon as the approval is in, and provide the two witnesses. We do not promise a particular date, because both municipalities release their own dates, but a complete application avoids follow-up questions that cost time.

  • Personalised checklist and document check
  • Application to Familieretshuset and all communication with it
  • Wedding date booked in Tønder or Aabenraa after the approval
  • Two witnesses included
  • Optional: Apostille Service (€100) on the Danish marriage certificate for use outside the EU, and certified translation German ⇄ Russian (€50 per document)

Start with our free document checklist, which takes about 2 minutes, or see what the Comfort Package includes. Applied to Familieretshuset yourself, already approved and no free date in sight? Our Date Reservation Service is for exactly that case. Every stage of the process is explained in how to get married in Denmark, step by step, and couples living in Germany will find the travel and recognition details in getting married in Denmark from Germany.

Frequently asked questions

Which town is closer to the German border, Tønder or Aabenraa?

Tønder. It lies about 5 km north of the border, while Aabenraa is about 25 km north of the Kruså/Padborg crossing on the E45. From Hamburg, both towns are about 2–2.5 hours by car (Tønder is about 200 km away, according to Tønder Kommune).

Can we marry on a Friday near the border?

In Aabenraa, yes, if you bring your own witnesses: appointments are available on Fridays. Aabenraa's page for couples from abroad offers no Saturdays; its Danish page lists a few Saturday dates, so ask the municipality before counting on one. Tønder's page for couples from abroad lists Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Its Danish page mentions Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings (9–12, not on Saturdays around public holidays or between Christmas and New Year), but those times are for couples who file their marriage declaration (ægteskabserklæring) with the municipality, not for couples from abroad who apply via Familieretshuset.

Is the ceremony held in German in both towns?

Yes, German is possible in both. Tønder Kommune highlights its registrars' very good German and English; Aabenraa Kommune names English, German or Danish, and both partners must be able to communicate in one of them, otherwise you need to bring an interpreter.

How soon after the approval can we marry?

That depends on the dates each municipality has released. Aabenraa releases appointments 60 days in advance and, as of September 2026, states that free appointments are about two months ahead. Tønder marries couples from abroad on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the free dates depend on what it has released when you book. In both towns the wedding must take place while the 4-month approval is valid.

Can we switch to the other town after the approval?

For Aabenraa, yes: Aabenraa Kommune asks couples who already hold an approval to contact Familieretshuset, which sends the documents to the municipality; you then receive Aabenraa's booking link. It is simpler to name the right town in the application from the start.

Can Denmark Wedding Services book a ceremony in Sønderborg?

No. Tønder and Aabenraa are the two town halls near the German border where we book ceremonies; we do not book ceremonies at other town halls such as Sønderborg. Our third location is Copenhagen.

Does the Comfort Package cost the same for Tønder and Aabenraa?

Yes. The Comfort Package costs €799.00 for both towns, including the Danish authority fee and two witnesses. Neither municipality charges for the ceremony itself.
