Visa Requirements for Marrying in Denmark 2026

One of the most common questions we receive from international couples is: 'Do I need a special visa to get married in Denmark?' The short answer is no — but there are important details depending on your nationality. Here is our complete visa guide for marrying in Denmark in 2026.

The Basic Rule

Denmark has no special marriage visa. To get married in Denmark, you simply need to be legally present in the country on the day of your ceremony. This means:

  • If you can legally enter Denmark (via visa-free travel, Schengen visa, or EU residence permit), you can get married.
  • There is no residency requirement — you don't need to live in Denmark.
  • There is no minimum stay — you can arrive, marry, and leave on the same day.

Scenario 1: EU/EEA Citizens

🇪🇺 If both partners are EU/EEA citizens, you can freely travel to Denmark and get married with just your passport or national ID card. No visa needed.

Scenario 2: One EU + One Non-EU Partner

🇪🇺 + 🌍 This is the most common scenario for our clients — see our Denmark binational couples guide for the wider context including documents and recognition. The non-EU partner needs:

  • A valid Schengen tourist visa (Type C) — available at any Danish or Schengen-country embassy
  • OR an existing EU residence permit from another Schengen country (e.g., German Aufenthaltstitel)
  • OR visa-free entry if their country has a visa-waiver agreement with the Schengen zone

Important: The visa or entry must be valid on the ceremony date. Plan accordingly. Our full Danish wedding documents checklist explains how visa documentation interacts with the Familieretshuset application.

Scenario 3: Both Partners Non-EU

🌍 + 🌍 Both partners need legal entry into the Schengen zone. Options:

  • Schengen tourist visa (Type C) for each partner
  • Existing residence permits from any Schengen country
  • Visa-free entry (check Denmark's visa-waiver list for your nationality)

Important: A Schengen visa from ANY Schengen country works — you don't specifically need a Danish visa.

Countries with Visa-Free Access to Denmark

Citizens of these countries can enter Denmark without a visa for up to 90 days:

  • 🇺🇸 USA, 🇨🇦 Canada, 🇦🇺 Australia, 🇳🇿 New Zealand
  • 🇬🇧 United Kingdom (post-Brexit)
  • 🇯🇵 Japan, 🇰🇷 South Korea, 🇸🇬 Singapore
  • 🇧🇷 Brazil, 🇲🇽 Mexico, 🇦🇷 Argentina
  • And many more

Do I Need to Mention Marriage on My Visa Application?

While it's not strictly required to state 'marriage' as the purpose of your visit, we recommend being transparent in your visa application. You can state that the purpose of your trip is tourism and a civil ceremony. Danish authorities are very welcoming of marriage tourism.

After the Wedding: Visa Implications

Getting married in Denmark does NOT automatically grant residency in Denmark or any EU country. Your marriage certificate may, however, be used to apply for:

  • Family reunification visas in your partner's home country
  • EU spouse residence permits (if your partner is an EU citizen)
  • Name change documents in your home country

Visa Scenarios by Top Nationalities — In Detail

The seven scenarios above cover the categories. Here's how each plays out for the nationalities our team works with most often:

🇷🇺 Russia — Russian passport holders need a Schengen tourist visa (Type C) issued by any Schengen embassy or consulate. Application typically takes 10–15 working days at Russian Schengen consulates in 2026, longer during peak season. Crucially: a Schengen visa from a country other than Denmark works fine — you can hold a German, French, or Italian Schengen visa and marry in Denmark on it.

🇺🇦 Ukraine — Ukrainian biometric passport holders enjoy visa-free travel to Schengen for 90 days within any 180-day window (since 2017). Couples currently displaced under EU temporary protection status can present that document as proof of legal entry.

🇮🇳 India — Indian passport holders need a Schengen tourist visa. Apply at the embassy of the Schengen country you'll enter first — even if that's not Denmark. The Danish embassy in New Delhi processes Schengen applications, and Schengen visas issued there are valid for travel to Denmark.

🇧🇷 Brazil — Brazilian passport holders enjoy 90-day visa-free entry. No application needed. Bring your passport, a return ticket, and proof of accommodation; Schengen border officers may ask.

🇨🇳 China — Chinese passport holders need a Schengen tourist visa. Application typically processed in 10–15 working days at the Danish embassy in Beijing.

🇹🇷 Turkey — Turkish passport holders need a Schengen tourist visa OR an existing EU residence permit (German Aufenthaltstitel, etc.). The Schengen visa application is straightforward; many Turkish couples we work with already have a Schengen visa for unrelated travel.

🇮🇷 Iran — Iranian passport holders need a Schengen tourist visa. Iran is not a Hague Convention member, which affects post-wedding apostille (see our apostille guide) but doesn't affect the marriage itself.

🇲🇽🇦🇷 Latin America — Mexican and Argentine passport holders enjoy 90-day visa-free entry. No application needed.

🇺🇸🇨🇦🇦🇺🇳🇿🇯🇵🇰🇷🇸🇬 Visa-Free Group — Citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore enter Denmark visa-free for 90 days within any 180-day window. The simplest path of all.

What If Your Visa Expires Mid-Process?

This is the single most common visa pitfall we see. Here's the typical scenario: a non-EU partner gets a Schengen tourist visa valid for 30 days. They submit the marriage application on day 5. AFL takes 5 working days to approve. They book the ceremony for day 25. The visa expires on day 30. Cutting it close.

If your visa is going to expire BEFORE your ceremony, you have options:

1. Apply for a longer Schengen visa — Many embassies issue 90-day or even multi-entry visas if you can show return tickets and accommodation. 2. Get a Schengen visa from your existing EU residence permit's country — Often easier and faster than a fresh tourist visa. 3. Consider an EU family reunification track — If you're already in a recognized partnership, this opens longer-term residency options. 4. Shift the wedding city — Aabenraa and Tønder have more flexible scheduling than Copenhagen and can accommodate ceremonies within 5–7 days of approval.

Our team checks visa expiry dates against ceremony booking before you commit to travel. This is part of why our application rejection rate is below 3%.

After the Wedding — What Your Marriage Certificate Unlocks (and What It Doesn't)

Getting married in Denmark does NOT grant residency or work rights anywhere automatically. What your Danish marriage certificate DOES unlock:

  • Family reunification visa applications in your partner's country of residence — Germany, Italy, France, etc., all accept a Danish marriage certificate as the basis for spouse visa applications. Processing time depends on the receiving country (Germany: 3–6 months; UK: 6–10 weeks; US: 8–14 months on average).
  • EU spouse residence permit — If your partner is an EU citizen, your marriage gives you specific rights under EU Directive 2004/38, including the right to accompany them.
  • Name change processes — Your marriage certificate is the legal basis for changing your surname in your home country.
  • Joint tax filing — Most countries allow married couples to file taxes jointly after registering the marriage locally.
  • Inheritance rights — Your spouse becomes a legal heir under your home country's law once the marriage is registered.

None of these happen automatically. Each requires a separate application in your home country, typically with the Danish marriage certificate (often with apostille) as the supporting document.

Embassy Contacts for Top 10 Nationalities

If you need to apply for a Schengen visa to attend your Danish wedding, these are the relevant embassies. Apply at the embassy of the Schengen country you'll enter first:

  • Danish Embassy in Moscow — for Russian passport holders
  • Danish Embassy in Beijing — Chinese passport holders
  • Danish Embassy in New Delhi — Indian passport holders
  • Danish Embassy in Ankara — Turkish passport holders
  • Danish Embassy in Tehran — Iranian passport holders (currently limited services)
  • Danish Embassy in Brasília — Brazilian passport holders (visa-free, but the embassy can verify status)
  • Danish Embassy in Cairo — Egyptian, Lebanese, Jordanian passport holders (regional consular jurisdiction)
  • Danish Embassy in Mexico City — Mexican and Latin American (visa-free for many)
  • Danish Embassy in Pretoria — South African passport holders
  • Danish Embassy in Manila — Filipino passport holders

Alternatively, any Schengen country's embassy can issue a Schengen visa that covers Denmark. Use whichever is most convenient.
