What Is an Apostille?

An Apostille is an international authentication certificate that verifies the legitimacy of a public document (like a marriage certificate) for use in another country. It was established by the Hague Convention of 1961 and is recognized by over 120 countries worldwide.

Do I Need an Apostille?

You need an Apostille if:

• You want to register your marriage in your home country
• You need to update your legal name in your home country
• You're applying for a spouse visa or family reunification
• Your home country's authorities request international authentication

You may NOT need an Apostille if:

• Both partners are EU citizens and plan to register the marriage within the EU (EU countries often accept each other's certificates directly)
• Your home country is not a Hague Convention member (in this case, you may need a different type of legalization)

How Does the Danish Apostille Work?

In Denmark, the Apostille is issued by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Udenrigsministeriet). The process involves:

Apostille by Country — Quick Reference

Not every country requires an apostille on a Danish marriage certificate. Here's the rule for the most common destinations:

• 🇩🇪 Germany — Often not required for everyday use (Bürgeramt, Finanzamt) under EU Regulation 2016/1191. Some Standesämter request it for name changes; we recommend ordering it if you plan to change your surname.
• 🇫🇷 France — Same EU regulation; usually accepted directly. Apostille recommended for official spouse visa or residence applications.
• 🇮🇹 Italy — EU regulation applies. Italian comuni occasionally request apostille for civil-status updates.
• 🇪🇸 Spain — EU regulation; rarely needed.
• 🇬🇧 United Kingdom — Post-Brexit, the UK requires apostille for marriage registration with the General Register Office and for visa applications. Always order if you'll use the certificate in the UK.
• 🇺🇸 USA — Apostille required for any state-level recognition (driver's license name change, social security, immigration). Order proactively.
• 🇨🇦 Canada — Required for federal recognition (passport name change, citizenship matters). Most provinces also require it for ID updates.
• 🇦🇺 Australia — Required for any DFAT-handled process and most state-level updates.
• 🇷🇺 Russia — Required for marriage registration at ZAGS and any local administrative use. Often combined with a certified Russian translation (we offer this).
• 🇹🇷 Turkey — Required for marriage registration with the Turkish municipality and for any spouse visa or residence application.
• 🇧🇷 Brazil — Required for civil registration in Brazil.
• 🇲🇽 Mexico — Required for any local registration; should be combined with a certified Spanish translation.
• 🇯🇵 Japan — Required for marriage registration with the koseki (family registry).
• 🇨🇳 China — China is not a Hague Convention member as of writing — see the next section.
• 🇮🇳 India — Hague member; apostille accepted directly by Indian authorities.
• 🇰🇷 South Korea — Hague member; apostille accepted.

When in doubt, order it. €100 is cheap insurance against "come back with the apostille" delays at home country offices.

What If Your Country Isn't a Hague Convention Member?

A handful of important countries (China, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Vietnam) are not Hague Apostille members. For these countries, an apostille is not enough — you need full consular legalization instead. The process:

1. Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs apostille (we handle this for €100) 2. Authentication by the Danish embassy in your country (or your country's embassy in Copenhagen) 3. Final stamp from your country's foreign affairs ministry on arrival

This adds 2–6 weeks and €100–€300 in additional fees depending on the country. We coordinate the Danish-side authentication; the home-country step you handle yourself or via a local agent. Talk to us before the wedding if your home country requires this — we'll factor it into the timeline.

Timeline: From Order to Home Delivery

• Day 0 — You select Apostille Service when booking the Comfort Package, or add it after the wedding.
• Day 1 (post-ceremony) — We collect your original Danish marriage certificate from the municipality.
• Day 2–3 — We submit it to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Udenrigsministeriet) in Copenhagen.
• Day 4–14 — Ministry processing. Currently averaging 7 working days as of 2026.
• Day 14–21 — Apostilled certificate is couriered to your home address (worldwide DHL).

For non-Hague countries, add 2–6 weeks for consular legalization on top.

Using Your Apostilled Certificate at Home

Once the apostilled certificate arrives, what you actually do with it varies by country and by what you want to update. The most common uses:

• Name change — Submit the apostilled certificate to your home country's civil registry, ID office, or DMV-equivalent. Process varies (US: state-by-state; UK: General Register Office; Germany: Standesamt).
• Spouse visa application — Submit to the immigration authority of the country you want to live in. The apostille is the proof that your marriage is real and legally recognized.
• Tax filing as married — Submit to your tax authority. Most countries accept the apostilled certificate directly.
• Bank joint accounts — Many banks accept the apostille for adding a spouse to existing accounts. Some larger banks have their own translation/notarization processes on top.
• Inheritance and beneficiary registration — Update wills, life insurance, retirement accounts.
• Healthcare and family insurance — In countries with state healthcare (UK NHS, German Krankenkasse), the apostilled certificate is the key for spouse coverage.
